"How long will it take me to recover from this illness/injury?"
"Will I be alone when I get old?"
"What if I have another episode?"
These are some questions that I have heard raised by clients whom I have counseled. Anxiety lies at the root of these "what if" questions. Anxiety is defined as "painful or apprehensive uneasiness of mind", "fearful concern or interest", and "earnest but tense desire" (Random House Dictionary, Merriam-Webster).
We all may experience some anxiety as a result of the demands of day-to-day living. On one hand, anxiety may even effectively prompt us to action. For example, you may feel anxious about a class that you are taking, and work even harder to succeed as a result. On the other hand, excessive anxiety may become debilitating. Fear often lies at the root of excessive anxiety. Excessive anxiety may affect a person in the following ways:
- Physically - lowered immune function, changes in sleeping patterns, headaches
- Mentally/Emotionally - lack of concentration, constant worry
- Socially - angry outbursts at others, irritability
- Spiritually - angry at God
So, how can you cope with anxiety? Following are some suggestions:
- Engage in physical activity (walking, other types of exercise). Physical exercise helps to ward off anxiety and stress.
- Adopt an attitude of gratitude. Think on what you do have instead of what is lacking. Count your blessings.
- Allow yourself some quiet time daily. Use this time to meditate and reflect.
- Extend your support network. It helps to have family and friends on whom you can call for help and support.
- Seek professional help. Talk with a counselor, pastor, or other helping professional.
Anxiety cannot change situations or outcomes. What we can change is ourselves. The following scripture can be helpful to you when you are feeling anxious:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus ~ Philippians 4:6,7
